A short history of funding and accomplishments post-Deepwater Horizon

It has been a decade since BP's Deep-water Horizon (DWH) oil rig exploded and sank on 20 April 2010, killing eleven workers and spreading at least 3.19 million barrels of crude into the Gulf of Mexico (Graham et al. 2011; Trustees Council 2016). In response to the spill, an estimated 1.84 million gallons of dispersant was utilized (OSAT-1 2010). Initial efforts to stop the spill failed, and the DWH oil spill lasted for 87 days, resulting in the largest spill in United States history, the contamination of more than 43,000 square miles of Gulf waters, and the oiling of at least 1,300 miles of coastal shoreline from Texas to Florida (US DOJ 2015).
