Circulation Improvement Study for Channel Islands Harbor, Ventura County, California

Coastal water quality has become an issue of increasing importance. Assembly Bill 411 (AB 411) aims to protect the public's health along California's beaches by requiring the posting of beaches if the water quality monitoring results reveal that indicator bacteria levels exceed established criteria. Circulation improvement has been identified as a solution to reduce the frequency of unacceptable bacteria levels at Kiddie Beach and Hobie Beach located in Channel Islands Harbor. Numerical modeling of the harbor was conducted as part of a study to evaluate alternatives to improve circulation. A numeric circulation improvement objective was developed utilizing the modeling results to estimate the effectiveness of the alternatives to reduce bacteria levels. Alternatives being considered include modification of an existing sheetpile groin, replacement of the existing sheetpile groin with a rubblemound groin, and the use of mechanical flow enhancement devices.
