摘要

In the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, discussions have centered on rebuilding resilient coastal systems to reduce damage from future disasters. "Resilience" has been defined in a variety of ways to emphasize those aspects of the concept most suitable for the application of interest. In general, resilience is understood as having the capacity to recover or bounce back from adversity and adapt to be prepared for the future. For this dedicated issue, resilience is defined by the Presidential Executive Order on climate change (E.O. 13653; Office of the White House 2013) as "the ability to anticipate, prepare for, and adapt to changing conditions and withstand, respond to, and recover rapidly from disruptions."
