Rinya Takayama describes the history of Japan's Seikan Ferry which operated for 80 years until the Seikan tunnel was opened in March 1988. The Imperial Government Railway/ Japanese National Railways (IGR/JNR) Seikan Ferry's 80 years of operation between the ports of Aomori and Hakodate ended on 13 March 1988 with the completion of the Seikan Tunnel linking Honshu and Hokkaido, and its opening to rail traffic.
