The first submariner

The Submarine service is celebrating its centenary in October 2001. To mark this anniversary, Richard Compton-Hall traces the origins of the submarine, once viewed as 'underhand and un-British', and looks at the life of its inventor, John Holland, who changed the face of naval warfare. The submarine is an Irish invention. This is why we are celebrating the centenary of USS Holland (SS-1) together with HM Submarine Torpedo Boat No.l, better known as Holland I, which were both named after the founding father of modern submarines, J. V. Holland, from County Clare, Ireland, and latterly New Jersey, USA.
