The end of World War Ⅱ was greeted with relief. Nations looked inwards to repair the damage suffered through six years of war. Yet as they did so the seeds were sown for a different type of conflict, one which nearly led to nuclear catastrophe. Even when Britain, the USA and the USSR were fighting together to overthrow Hitler's Germany, it was in an atmosphere of mutual mistrust. Peace reinforced the idealogical differences between capitalist and communist philosophies.
