The South Pacific has always evoked a siren's call to those more accustomed to the biting winds and cold seas of the northern latitudes.In the early 1970s an unexpected job opportunity took me into this enticing part of the globe.The work was in the Cook Islands on the main island of Rarotonga, and getting there was not easy.Because the island group had yet to enter the jet age, I found myself taking passage from Sydney on Lloyd Triestino's Guglielmo Marconi as far as Tahiti where I spent several weeks before catching Pacific Far East Line's southbound Monterey to Rarotonga.
