Conflct in the Southern Ocean

The battle between eco warriors and Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean has seen some dramatic confrontations between the whalers' mother ship and protesters from two different organisations who have fallen out between themselves. Over the past 20 years, the whale-processing vessel Nisshin Maru (1987/8,030 gt) has regularly been chased, obstructed and harrassed by vessels from Greenpeace and the breakaway organsation Sea Shepherd. They have collided several times.
