Smit tackles grounding

In early august international, salvage contractor Smit International was hired under a Lloyd's Open Form contract to limit oil leakage from the grounded bulk carrier Full City after the empty 26,800dwt ship went up on rocks 132km south of Oslo. All 23 Chineserncrewmen were safely evacuated. Investigations are continuing into the cause of the grounding, said to have been caused by engine failure, which happened in stormy weather and resulted in the loss of some bunker fuel. Norwegian police arrested the captain, apparently because he did not notify coastal authorities that his ship was inrndanger, but he was later released on bail. Full City was built in Japan in 1995 and is owned by The Roc Maritime Inc of Panama, while its operator is COSCO of China.
