Recycling Old Ships

Over the last few years Aliaga (pronounced Aliyah) in Turkey has consolidated its position as the premier ship recycling site in Europe, even though at 60km north-west of Izmir, the area is located in Asia. Breakers at Aliaga are able to offer higher prices for scrap vessels than their European contemporaries, and, although local wage rates are moderate, they are significantly higher than at Indian sub-continental yards. As at Alang in India, steelworks to take all the scrap steel are located conveniently close to Aliaga's breaking plots.
