The largest drugs haul in the history of the Irish state, 1.8 tonnes of cocaine worth an estimated EUD 500 million, was detained on the 60ft ketch Dances with Waves 150 nautical miles off the country's southwest coast on 6 November 2008. in Operation Sea Bight, Naval Service RlBs despatched from LE Niamh intercepted the ketch at night. A crew of three was arrested and taken to Castletownbere with assistance from sistership LE Roisin (P51) and Customs Cutter RCC Suirbheir (see SM, Oct 2008). Dances with Waves was then taken to the southern fishing harbour under the control of naval personnel, and 75 bales of cocaine were unloaded.
