History made at Preston

In early september a coaster bound inwards in the river Ribble in Lancashire made a surprise visit to the port of Preston. Preston was once an important port, especially with trade to Ireland, but has been closed for many years now. The vessel concerned was Armac Marine's coaster River Carrier (1986/794gt), which had loaded a transformer at Ellesmere Port on the Manchester Ship Canal. River Carrier discharged her cargo in the lock onto the north side, where a space had been cleared to allow a crane from Leyland to lift the transformer ashore. It was later moved to Howick Transfer Station at Penwortham.
