The Kylsant Case

The history of British shipping is marked by the Kylsant Case of the 1930s, during which it was found that Owen Philipps, by then Lord Kylsant, had misled investors about the financial health of the Royal Mail Steam Packet group, which by 1928 had become the world's largest shipping and shipbuilding group.rnRMSP, under Kylsant's leadership, had expanded rapidly and acquired a large number of other British firms, including PSNC, Nelson Line, Lamport & Holt, Elder Dempster, Union-Castle and others, as well as a controlling interest in Harland & Wolff. The acquisitions, known collectively as the Royal Mail group, were based on Kylsant's projections that the world's economy would recover from a downward trend noted in the late 1920s.
