125th Anniversary of the rescue of the steamship Oregon's passengers and crew

As the great-granddaughter of Captain Elvin Mitchell, I would like to recall the largest at-sea rescue in the waters near New York Harbor, which happened on 14 March 1886, 125 years ago this year. The incident saw the British liner Oregon being rammed by the coal sloop Charles H. Morse, which was loaded with 200 tons of coal.
