Cunard button mystery

am seeking information about the Cunard Engineer's buttons pictured here. The first is the British & North American Royal Mail, pre-Cunard 1839-1878. The other is of the same design, but with the Cunard logo. I am unable to find out when they were first worn and when the practice stopped.
