Olivier Macoin, captain of Normandie, began his career at sea in 1980 on a supply ship off the coast of Gabon. He wanted to go to sea after seeing the merchant navy sea school's programme, which 'looked like a real school of life'. Since 1980 he has worked on a variety of ships and for a number of different companies, in 1981 he transferred to the tanker Pierre Guillaumat, in 1982 he worked on ferries to Corsica and in 1984 served on an ore bulk carrier from South Korea to South Africa, as well as on a barge which was being used for cable laying between Sangate and Folkestone.
