Why it is that Titanic exerts such a huge fascination for so many? It was a tragedy, but Titanic was not the first and certainly not the last ship to sink on her maiden voyage. She was not the fastest Atlantic liner (that accolade belonged to the Cunarder Mauretania) and could never have gained the record, as she was built for luxury, not record-breaking speeds. Although she was the largest liner yet built, the Germans were planning even bigger vessels, and she was not unique, being the second of the Olympic class. Newspaper articles published before the maiden voyage had claimed that the Olympic class were 'practically unsinkable' but that is not the same as unsinkable.
