I was very interested to read the article by Paul Brown about Baltic Heroes (SM, August), In the late 1940s I was given the book Shipping Wonders of the World, edited by Clarence Winchester, which has a chapter on Coastal Motor Boats, and the lead picture is the same as in your article. The chapter covers their development and subsequent secret building on the Thames in 1916, then operations in the Channel, Ostend and Russia. This type of boat was evolved by Sir John Thorneycroft and Tom Thorneycroft after their years of experiments with racing motor boats.
