Through a Stena career lasting almost two decades, there were few more comfortable or popular ships than Stena Saga, which opened the Frederikshavn-Oslo service in 1979. Even then she had over a decade of service on the clock since appearing as the newly-completed Patricia on Swedish Lloyd's Southampton-Bilbao service in 1967. She was bought by Stena in 1978 and first named Stena Oceana. During a visit to Smith's Dock on the Tyne, she had her superstructure raised by 1.15m to provide extra car space, with the main deck extended in a restaurant area forward, with additional cabins fitted aft. Gross tonnage increased from 8,896 to 14,139, with capacity up from 748 passengers to 1,300 (with 946 cabin berths) and car space increased by 100 to 275.
