The US 3rd Fleet has hosted RIMPAC 2014, the world's largest international maritime exercise, which took place in and around the Hawaiian Islands between 26 June and 1 August. This year's event, the 24th since the exercises began in 1971, involved naval forces from 23 nations, with three countries - Brunei, India and the People's Republic of China - taking part for the first time. Also new to the exercises, among the 47 ships, six submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel, was the participation of the hospital ships USNS Mercy and the Chinese PLAN'S Peace Ark. The latter was accompanied by the destroyer Haikou, frigate Yueyang and the supply ship Qiandaohu. Another debutant, India was represented by the frigate INS Sahyadri, which reached Pearl Harbor after a 5,000 nautical mile voyage.
