The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has found that the collision with a berth at Harwich Parkeston Quay last summer involving Sirena Seaways was due to the DFDS vessel approaching too fast because no one on the bridge noticed a back-up system was keeping an engine running at 63 per cent of power. Nearly 500 passengers were stranded on board for two hours after the crash, which took place on 22 June 2013. The MlAB concluded that the engine continued to run unnoticed after the impact, which prevented tugs from moving the vessel for safe passenger disembarkation. The 22,382gt former Dana Sirena, renamed earlier last year, was holed in several places, including below the water line, and there was severe damage to the quay. DFDS said steps had been made to stop such an accident happening again.
