Passenger-only service

As well as the car ferries operated by Northlink and Pentland Ferries, a passenger-only service is available from John O'Croats. Operated by the appropriately named John O'Croats Ferry company, the 29.6m vessel Pentland Venture (1987) runs between John O'Croats and Burwick on Orkney. The 186gt vessel can carry up to 250 passengers and operates a service between May and September, making two or three crossings every day. There is a connecting coach to Kirkwall after every ferry arrival at Burwick for those wanting a day on Orkney without a car. The crossing takes only 40 minutes, and Pentland Venture is a regular sight in the small harbour at John O'Groats. Pentland Venture is also operated on wildlife and sightseeing trips in the Firth during the summer.
