Norman Atlantic clearance

The Italian Authorities granted permission for the two lower garage decks of the fire-gutted ro-pax ferry Norman Atlantic to be cleared, with work starting in Bari during April. The 2009-built vessel, owned by Italian company Vismar, was running in Greece-Italy traffic on charter to Creek operator ANEK when hit by fire on 28 December 2014 while en route to Italy from Patras and sailing north west of Corfu. After first being towed to Brindisi, the vessel, which had been carrying 478 passengers and crew, was moved to Bari, with a long and complex series of investigations getting under way. All vehicles are treated as total losses since they were exposed to high temperatures and smoke during the incident and to damaging conditions through the subsequent long stay inside the ship.
