Built in 1914, Doulos is a bona fide contemporary of famous ships such as Cunard's Aquitania and HAPAG's Vaterland. For the last three decades, she has frequented all corners of the world as a floating Christian ministries vessel. By the time the author stepped aboard her in late 2019, she had been rechristened Doulos Phos and begun a new career as the centrepiece of a resort hotel. Hauled up out of the water, she rests 'on the hard' at Bintan Island, Indonesia, opposite Singapore. Her final withdrawal had come in 2009 after an astounding 95 years at sea. Since then Doulos Phos has joined the ranks of those rare ships that find gainful employment in the afterlife.
