I was intrigued to read (SM, Nov 2019) about Whitby shipping and the Headlam Shipping company. There was a Liberty ship mentioned in the article named Sandsend, built in 1943. This brought back memories of several Liberty ships, one of which, named Hai Suan, sailed into Singapore harbour and raised the communist flag. Her crew then fled, leaving the ship moored in Singapore for some seven years. There were a number of court cases about the ship, but eventually a Greek company bought the vessel, which had a new bottom built and departed as Julia.
