HOW DID YOUR CAREER AT SEA START?I went to London Nautical School, a secondary school founded after the sinking of Titanic. It teaches core subjects and offers the option to do GCSEs in nautical studies and marine navigation, and I took every opportunity to go to sea. We were sent out on Earl of Romney and Jonas Hanway, the Marine Society's training ships based at Gravesend and former RN inshore survey vessels. I tried to spend as much time on them as possible. I grew up in London and wanted to go to this school in particular, for which I had to pass a basic nautical exam.
