Heading out of Piraeus Great Harbour on another crossing of the Saronic Gulf to Aegina is the 1,000-passenger/120-car stern- loader Agios Nektarios Aiginas, which has a central ramp for vehicles and passenger gangways on either side. Built by Ergoship at the Savas Shipyard in Eleusis, near Piraeus, the 1,091 gt vessel first appeared as Panagia Skiathou and ran for North Sporades and Evia Maritime between Volos, Skiathos, Skopelos and Pili until she was acquired by Anes Lines in August 2008 for service to Aegina. The central funnel is a dummy which was originally on the motor vessel Apollo, dating from 1964. The twin MWM diesels give the vessel a speed of 18 knots, with exhausts being located on either beam, level with the dummy funnel. More than half a dozen companies operate on the Piraeus-Aegina run, two of them using vintage Flying Dolphin hydrofoils, which cross in 40 minutes at higher fares than the ferries, which take between 65 and 75 minutes. Although Anes run exclusively to Aegina, other vessels continue to Agistri.
