HMS Cavalier (D73) was one of 96 War Emergency Programme destroyers ordered between 1940 and 1942. She was also one of the first ships to be built with the forward and aft portions welded and the midsection riveted to provide greater strength. This method of construction also helped to give her additional speed and meant that more women could be involved in the construction work, as welding was seen as less heavy work than riveting.
