Most shipping companies rely on their'standard' ships, which make money, enjoy careers that are mostly unexceptional, and plod round the oceans on routine voyages carrying their cargoes to ports on regular schedules. Many of these ships carry the same name as one or more predecessors, usually as a reminder of a seafaring lifestyle from a previous generation. The British Tanker Company's four vessels, which successively carried the name British Renown, were typical workhorse tankers and fitted the 'standard' description.
