The tug named Hero featured in the October Mystery Ship was the last paddle tug to be built for commercial owners. She was built by Bow McLachlan & Co of Paisley and launched in 1931 as John H. Amos (despite the shipyard going bankrupt during her construction). The initial design for the vessel was said to have been drafted in 1888, and when she appeared in 1931 she was something of an anachronism. Her owners, Tees Conservancy Commissioners, operated her from 1931 to 1967 on all manner of duties, but mainly moving barges to and from dredging operations on the river Tees. She was completed in February 1931, but the Commissioners would not accept her due to her speed not being up to specification. A further two years passed before she was formally accepted into service.
