The Royal Navy has a Carrier Strike capability once again, with fixed-wing aircraft operating from a British aircraft carrier for the first time in eight years. The long-anticipated moment took place on 25 September, with a pair of F-35B fighter jets joining HMS Queen Elizabeth as part of first-of-class flight trials near the US eastern seaboard. The first F-35 Lightning Ⅱ landing and take-off were the start of a two-month test programme that will seek to establish day and night operating limits for the aircraft operating from the QE class. Following the arrival of her first fast jets on deck, HMS Queen Elizabeth also welcomed the US Navy's largest helicopter, the MH-53E Sea Dragon, and a MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft. The latter has previously flown from the decks of the helicopter carriers HMS Illustrious and HMS Ocean.
