Challenges for design tools

It is only within the last few years that product modelling tools have found acceptance in ship design, allowing a move away from traditional 2D drafting techniques to full 3D modelling environments. While these tools greatly enhance production, identifying conflicts and allowing integrated teams to work closely together in the detailed design stages, many ship design CAD vendors advocate their introduction at the earliest stages before a basic concept has been investigated.
