Hydrex completes complex rudder repairs

When a class survey in Yokohama, Japan on a 228m vehicle carrier revealed a number of cracks in the rudder and a missing cover plate, Hydrex was asked to perform its repairs during the vessel's stop in the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium. To allow the ship to sail from Yokohama, the diving company who had done the inspection drilled crack arrests to prevent propagation of the cracks. While a plan based on the information from the inspection done in Yokohama was devised by the Hydrex technical department and approved by the customer, the vessel sailed on to Zeebruges where it met up with the repair diving team. A detailed inspection of the rudder revealed the damage to be far worse than expected. While the team started grinding out and welding the cracks, the team leader made contact with the Hydrex headquarters and together with the ship's superintendent and the class surveyor, the scope of the work was discussed.
