EnSolve Biosystems has been awarded a $445 000 research grant to develop a prototype treatment device for the removal of hydrocarbons from exhaust scrubbers. Current scrubber systems focus on the removal of SOx and NOx from ships' engines, rather than the hydrocarbons that typically end up in the scrubber effluent, and which is likely to violate IMO clean-water standards. EnSolve's technology, called EnScrub, removes the hydrocarbon portion of this waste stream.
