The year 2008 was marked by extremes: sky-rocketing charter rates and huge volumes of new orders in summer, plummeting rates and no order activity towards the end of the year. By the beginning of 2009, Lloyd's reported that around 450 bulk carriers were inactive (i.e. laid-up at ports), representing 9 per cent of the global bulk carrier fleet.rnAs of January 1st, 2009, the total bulk carrier fleet for ships of 300 gt and over was composed of 7,481 bulk carriers including 86 Ore/Bulk/Oil carriers (OBOs). The total bulk carrier fleet in 2008 increased by 7.2 per cent.
