Havyard eyes up renewable energy sector

While the offshore oil and gas segment remains in rude health, providing shipbuilding opportunities for many, an increasing number of designers and builders are diversifying into the wind farm support sector, transferring their knowledge of specialist operational areas, such as anchor handling, heavy lift and technician transfer, to the wind farms scattered around the coastlines of Europe and beyond. Norway's Havyard is one of the latest companies to take the plunge into this latter market, having secured a contract to supply two Havyard 832 service operation vessel (SOV) class ships to owner Esvagt, primarily for use in servicing and maintaining wind turbines. The first of these vessels, currently monikered number 118, was recently launched at Havyard's Leirvik yard, her hull having been assembled by Turkish shipbuilder Cemre earlier in the year. She will be chartered out to energy major Siemens.
