Even as recently as a decade ago, apprenticeships were, in the main, viewed as a rather anachronistic means of staff recruitment, outside of specialist, niche industries. Figures released by the UK Centre for Economics and Business Research this year, however, reveal that hands-on learning schemes are booming in popularity and take-up. The research body's findings indicate that, in the UK, 5 million consumers have announced that they would prefer to do business with apprentice employers, and that the typical apprentice can generate an estimated £10,000 (US$15,300) each year, in productivity gains, for his or her employer.
