The downside to publication deadlines is that we sometimes get hold of a breaking story as we're about to go to press. We were hoping to focus on the recent IMO subcommittee discussions regarding the correct designation for technicians tasked with the maintenance of offshore wind farm turbines; unfortunately, these meetings were still ongoing as our deadline loomed large. Its a debate that's been highly anticipated for a while now, not least for the implications it holds for the offshore renewable energy sector as a whole. As argued in previous issues of Ship & Boat International, going back to 2011, the current classification of turbine technicians as 'passengers' aboard crew transfer vessels (CTVs) can be highly misleading as to these individuals' actual skillsets, and restrictive when it comes to new vessel design.
