In producing ship design computer tools, especially for the vital early stages of the process, there is a general assumption that the common key naval architecture aspects mean a generic method can be ubiquitously applied. This paper challenges this belief - not just because some ship types are inherently more complex than others but also the appropriate method depends on the degree of novelty in the range of possible design solutions being considered. The paper considers the diverse number of issues likely to be raised, not just in a given naval ship design solution but also the wider issues affecting the design environment in which a new ship is to be produced. The paper, in considering recent computer based design tool development, concludes that those appropriate for the concept phase need particularly to respond to developments that argue for greater recognition of human factors issues early in ship design studies, as these can address primary whole ship safety and survivability concerns.
