Over the past months we've seen and heard of a number of initiatives designed to move autonomous shipping from napkin drawing to a commercial reality. But what technology will enable drone and autonomous shipping to exist? Although we're seeing continuous technological development in the field of satellite communications in facilitating broadband to shipping, and the development of remote navigation ship systems, the reality of sailing a crewless ship still appears to be nearly two decades away. We might, to begin with, wish to deal with the terms being used for crewless ships. Both 'drone' and 'autonomous' vessels are often spoken of in the same context, but would be operated in quite different ways.
