New research vessel for Virginia

Canadian builder Meridien Maritime Reparation has been contracted to build a 28.3m x 8.5m x 3.9m research vessel for the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), US. Based on a design supplied by Connecticut-based JMS Naval Architects, the forthcoming vessel has been ordered to replace VIMS' existing 19.8m flagship, Bay Eagle. The newbuild will mainly undertake fisheries-related oceanographic research work, though offshore oil and gas exploration surveys, wind energy surveys and environmental impact studies will also be made possible by the boat's flexible design, JMS Naval Architects says.
