CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN IS SITTING IN the living room of his penthouse apartment in Paris on a brisk and sunny January morning, the metallic thread on his custom velvet slippers glistening like the top of the Eiffel Tower visible through the windows. He is explaining how his longtime friend Jacques Grange, the ne plus ultra of French decorating, came to design the space. "Jacques said, 'I'm going to ask you three questions,'" the shoemaker to the stars tells me. '"If you answer them truthfully, I'll do your apartment.'"
