Development of Drastically Innovative BSCCO (DI-BSCCO) Wire

Extensive research has been focused especially on the first and second generation superconducting wires. Recently, due to the introduction of the controlled overpressure (CT-OP) sintering technique, a first generation wire called BSCCO was drastically innovated in its performances such as critical current, n-value, unit length and mechanical strength. This new BSCCO wire, which is named the Drastically Innovative BSCCO (DI-BSCCO) wire, shows excellent Ic-B-T characteristics in areas where applications are expected, and is the most practical high-Tc superconducting wire. The commercial viability of high-Tc superconducting wire is assessed by merit factor, which is cost divided by the critical current. The DI-BSCCO wire is prospected to have the proper merit factor by obtaining higher critical current and reducing cost by mass production. It is expected that the DI-BSCCO wire will be used in a wide variety of applications after higher performances as well as lower merit factor were achieved.
