Mazumder and Altermann (2007-this issue) disagree with our final remark in Roe and Hermansen (2006, p. 262 last paragraph). They compare deformed cross-strata in the Protoproterozoic Chaibasa Formation, of inferred subtidal origin, with our Neoproterozoic examples and conclude that, in general, an auto- or allokinetic triggering mechanism (sensu Leeder, 1987), can be deduced from the lateral extent of the deformed sediments, their deformation geometry and relationship with bounding beds. In this reply we elaborate on our concluding remark and, in addition, we argue that discrimination between the two kinds of triggering mechanism is not as straightforward as they suggest.
