Surveys by BIMCO and the International Shipping Federation (ISF) have highlighted a likely shortage of skilled sea staff in the future. Current orders for new ships will make the problem worse. Anyone who is concerned about the future safety and efficiency of merchant shipping should read the story that follows. Serving shipmasters, officers and other nautical professionals formed the Institute with the single aim of raising standards of competency among those in control of seagoing ships. As you will see from the article, they have done a great job so far and The Nautical Institute can make a unique contribution in the future. Senior professionals, including members of the Institute, are the custodians of nautical skills and expertise. The ideas that follow will help pass on those skills to the next generation of seafarers. Finding out about the successes and limitations in the past will help plan for the future and encourage other senior staff to join their colleagues and improve professional training.
