CHINA INTERNATIONAL RESCUE AND SALVAGE CONFERENCE 2012

The seventh biennial China International Rescue & Salvage Conference (CIRSC) was held in Chengdu in September, and brought together almost 300 delegates from around the world. Opening the event, Wang Zhenliang, Director General of China Rescue and Salvage, traced the development of lifesaving and salvage from ancient Greece, and pointed out that there was a rescue organisation on the Yangtze as early as 12 AD. His organisation now employs 10,000 people and operates 80 rescue vessels, 126 tugs and 21 helicopters. Since 1951 they have saved 4,200 ships and 61,000 people.
