Gibraltar's famous cable car takes visitors 412mtr above sea level, for spectacular views southwards across the Strait of Gibraltar to Africa, west across the bay to the Port of Algeciras, northwards to Spain and east across the Mediterranean. In short, it offers a bird's eye view of the geography that has made Gibraltar a unique proposition in the maritime world for centuries. Marine services company MH Bland, which built and opened the cable car in 1966, has drawn up plans to replace it - the idea being to close the facility at the end of the 2018 season and have the new one up and running for 2019.
