I work closely with the national controlling authorities for more than 10 different nations operating fixed-wing and helicopter maritime patrol aircraft. As the Maritime Air (MARAIR) current operations staff officer, I work with my colleagues in the MARAIR Ops Branch as well as with our watchstanders in the Maritime Operations Centre to monitor, plan and execute NATO MARAIR operations across Maritime Air Command's areas of responsibility. It can thus be a little complicated because of the complex nature of staff work, operations and the alliance itself, but at the end of the day my job boils down to knowing who's who in the NATO zoo and making connections between them to maintain and improve allied interoperability and deterrence.
