On April 28,1910, he arrived at Fort Trumbull in New London, Connecticut, the latest home for the Revenue Cutter Service School of Instruction. Renamed the Coast Guard Academy with the creation of that service in 1915, the school would move to its present New London location in 1932. Commissioned as a third lieutenant, U.S. Revenue Cutter Service, on June 7,1913, Stone began a typical career for a junior officer of that organization, drawing orders to the USRC Onondaga. With the exception of a few months' stint on USRC Itasca, Stone spent most of his first three years on what would become the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Onondaga.
