The Pentagon's fiscal 2020 budget proposal delivered to Capitol Hill in March includes $23.8 billion to buy 14. ships and continue development of the Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), maintaining a historically high level of spending for shipyards that could get even more money from lawmakers. The shipbuilding proposal is tucked inside a massive $750 billion defense budget request that includes the Pentagon's base budget, a sizeable war spending account, emergency spending for the border wall and hurricane relief efforts as well as money for Department of Energy nuclear programs.
